The Whip Gig Review

1 month ago 12th May 15:21

Electro gigs are usually hot and sweaty affairs at the best of time but when the sun beats down like it was doing last Saturday (May 10), standing in a small dark room is less tempting than ever.

Luckily Manchester’s The Whip have enough appeal to pull even the biggest sun worshipper indoors. In the last year they’ve toured the world, played Glastonbury, appeared live on Lily Allen’s chat show and released their long awaited debut album.

The Whip are definitely hot property, so much so that tonight some of their equipment spontaneously combusts right on stage.

Tonight’s small stuffy venue may not be the outdoor stage that most of the crowd would have preferred but it has been hosted bands like Jamie T, Wombats and The Enemy all while they were on their way to the top of the charts.

By the time The Whip came on stage there was a healthy sized crowd all pressed against the front barrier. It’s always the sign of a good band when they can afford to open the set with one of their better-known and well-loved material.

As they burst straight into ‘Sister Sian’ it was obvious from the start that The Whip would have no trouble keeping people dancing for the length of their set.

The thing that separates The Whip from their electro contemporaries is that their songs have a real sense of melody.
