Hanks' 'Terror' Over Acting Archives

6 months ago 12th May 06:30

Tom Hanks is terrified his acting career will come to a screeching halt one day - because critics are constantly reviewing his oldest films.

The 52-year-old movie star has become one of Hollywood's most successful leading men since dropping out of college more than 30 years ago to pursue a screen career.

But despite his proven track record - with box office totals in his native U.S. alone exceeding $3.3 billion (£2.2billion) - Hanks is convinced his success could unravel at any minute.

He says, "(Each film) lasts forever that's the thing... Years from now, three, four, five years, everybody's film is recalibrated. (Critics ask)if it's worthwhile or not, whether moments are proper or authentic or if it really has some purpose in some human zeitgeist... so every day, no matter where you are in the world, it's petrifying when you think about that. I'm walking that tightrope".

Meanwhile the actor-turned-director also reveals he has stopped pleading with Ron Howard to star in one of his movies - because his attempts to cast the the filmmaker have been rejected for the last 11 years.

Former Happy Days star Howard turned down Hanks' offer to return to the small screen in 1998 TV miniseries From the Earth to the Moon - an Emmy-winning project co-produced by the pair, and co-written and co-directed by Hanks.

And The Da Vinci Code star admits he has finally given up on his dream of directing the filmmaker after several of his casting efforts were brushed off.

Hanks says, "I tried to get him to do some of the miniseries things we did. I tried to get him to come down and be in From the Earth to the Moon and he passed on a couple of things here and there. (He said), 'Hey, it's just not a good time.'"
