Heidi Klum spent hours nursing a distressed baby during a visit to a hospital in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The mother-of-four travelled to the Caribbean republic late last year (12) as part of a humanitarian trip with representatives of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) to see how the communities are rebuilding after a devastating tremor in 2010 killed at least 220,000 residents.
She was saddened to see progress in the country is extremely slow, but it was a heartbreaking trip to a ward full of premature babies at a hospital in capital Port-au-Prince which caused Klum's maternal instincts to take over.
She tells British magazine Hello!, "One baby was crying and crying. Her mother had abandoned her at the clinic a few days before and she was lying there all by herself.
"I asked for some milk and a blanket so I could take her out and hold her. She was covered in her own urine and faeces, but as soon as I picked her up she stopped crying.
"I held her in my arms for the rest of the day.It hurt my heart to put her back down in the crib and say goodbye.
"I keep thinking about her and wondering if she will make it".
During her trip, Klum also visited a 'tent city' where impoverished families live, and a crime-plagued ghetto, and she admits she is frustrated authorities are taking so long to rebuild the country after the 2010 earthquake.
She adds, "I've seen people with leprosy in India and gone all over Africa, I've slept in dwellings with no heat and no toilet.
"I've seen poverty in many places, but not to the extreme of Haiti...
"I remember almost three years ago, how I watched the devastating results of the earthquake in Haiti and saw the world band together to help the Haitians rebuild.
"We promised to keep an eye on them as they healed. When I went on this recent trip, expecting to see three years of progress, I realised that we have lost focus. It was an experience I won't forget".
