Keeley Hawes has suffered with depression since she was 17-years-old.
The 'Line of Duty' actress previously confessed she could relate to the dark and haunted detective Lindsay Denton she plays in the BBC Two drama, and she's now revealed it's because she herself has been suffering with depression for a long time.
She explained: "I started suffering with depression when I was 17. [Therapy] hasn't worked for me. I've got a chemical imbalance that has to be managed. And then it's fine.
"It's not something that's cured and then goes away and you move on. You are always aware, even if it's only on a bad morning here and there, that it can escalate quickly."
The 38-year-old star - who has also appeared in dramas including 'Doctor Who', 'Spooks' and 'Ashes to Ashes' - insisted that while it has affected her badly in the past, she doesn't allow her depression to consume her anymore.
She told Red magazine: "Life is too short for that. I wouldn't let it happen again. I wouldn't let it overtake me."
Speaking previously about her character in 'Line of Duty', Keeley - who is set to star in the upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novel 'The Casual Vacancy' - said: "She's depressed - I know what it's like - but she has to carry on. People do."
