Sting is to star in his own Broadway show.

The singer, who wrote the music and lyrics of the show, entitled 'The Last Ship', has confirmed he will soon assume the lead role, which is currently being played by Jimmy Nail.

The show - which is inspired by Sting's childhood in England, but has been struggling to attract large audiences - opened on October 26, and the singer has told The New York Times: "I've been working on this show for five years and been at every rehearsal, every performance, so it's not like I've flown in from Planet Rock Star to save the day."

It's been revealed that the 63-year-old musician will play the role of shipyard foreman Jackie White, from Tuesday, December 9 until Saturday, January 10.

Jeffrey Seller, the show's producer, said the move was designed to help give the production a chance at running until the Tony Awards in June.

He explained to the publication; "Our goal is to win the Tony [for best musical].

"We need a boost, we need to break through, we need some ammo."

Appearing alongside Sting will be Rachel Tucker, a finalist on BBC One talent show 'I'd Do Anything'.
