Every time it looks as though we’ve made even just a small step towards equality and eradicating racial bias, something happens to shine a spotlight on just how messed up Hollywood and the entertainment industry can be behind closed doors.
This week, it’s been claimed that Bridgerton breakout star Regé-Jean Page was rejected for a role as Superman’s grandfather in the television series Krypton, due to the colour of his skin.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, former DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns - who was still serving in the role at the time - said that the character being casted could not be Black.
THR went on to paraphrase a statement from a rep for Johns, who defended the eventual decision and said that Johns "believed fans expected the character to look like a young Henry Cavill"; the actor who takes on the role of Superman in the DC film universe.
What we do know however, is that Krypton is set in a completely different universe to that of the movie series; so exactly why this was leaned on as a deciding factor is unclear.
Page appeared to confirm what was being said had some merit, taking to his Twitter to explain how much it hurt “back then” and, how much it still hurts him now.
Also this week, a new trailer for upcoming Disney live-action film Cruella was unveiled, which aims to tell the origin story of one of the company’s most iconic and recognisable villains.
In the teaser, we see Cruella go from a shy young woman hoping to make it big in fashion, to somebody who is ready to take on the world and all those who oppose her in the journey of making a name for herself.
With Emma Stone in the titular role, opposite an always-captivating Emma Thompson as her fashion powerhouse adversary, this could be one of the most thrilling and indeed campest Disney outings of recent memory.
When people started making early assumptions, comparing the film to Joker - which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the earliest version of the Clown Prince of Crime we’ve ever seen in live action - Stone spoke out and said that this wasn’t actually the case.
Finally, those on Twitter were going wild with the trend #ASongOrMovieForBirds, twisting lyrics and film titles with various species of our feathered friends.
