It seems the UK truly is a nation of apologisers, as new research has revealed that the average British person says ‘sorry’ three times a day.

This comes to a total of a staggering 1,022 apologies every year - with the UK as a whole apologising over 200m times a day.

The study by GalaBingo.com and its charity partner 52 Lives, also revealed that 4% of people apologise more than 10 times a day, whilst 30% admit to apologising when somebody bumps into them.

The UK’s top five reasons for saying ‘sorry’ are:

Bumping into someone (82%)

Making a mistake (77%)

Upsetting someone (76%)

Being late (76%)

Cancelling plans (68%)

Leeds came out as the city that apologises the most, with a third saying they apologise at least 5 times every day, working out at 1,825 a year.

Commenting on the research, GalaBingo.com’s Head of Brand Marketing, Karina Adrian, said: “It’s interesting to see how much people apologise, especially for things they didn’t do, like when someone bumps into them.

“It is definitely something that makes us British!”
