76 percent of Brits don't know who or what John Dory is

If you've heard of the elusive John Dory, you can give yourself a pat on the back, because over three quarters of Brits struggled to know who (or what) it is.

A quarter of those surveyed thought it referred to a politician, and 14 percent thought it was the name of a footballer for England.

But what's the real answer? It might surprise you - it's actually a type of fish.

A further 12 percent of people said it was a singer, and almost one in ten answered that it was a brand of whisky.

And Brits were also baffled over the Queen's favourite fish Dover Sole, with 41 percent thinking it was a holiday resort, and one in ten guessing it was a music genre.

Asda is now launching these two fish in 70 of their UK stores to try to educate the UK, and to get the public eating seafood that isn't just cod and haddock. The more unusual fish do well at expensive shops like Selfridges, where they can cost around £35-£48/kg.

Asda is now attempting to bring the fish to the masses by giving them cut-down prices: John Dory costing £14.96/kg and Dover Sole priced at £19.97/kg, which is around £6 per fish.

Jill Skipsey, fish counter buyer at Asda says: “TV chefs, such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have done wonders for championing lesser known species of fish, but that doesn’t help shoppers if they can’t get their hands on it to try at home. The average person unfortunately doesn’t have the luxury of shopping at Harrods for their weekly grocery shop and at those prices, it’s easy to understand why.

“We hope that by launching the two varieties in stores, we’ll encourage customers to experiment and try something new and show that you can enjoy great quality foods at even better value.”
