Manufactured meat could be the food of the future

The United Nations and the government are reportedly worried about what we will eat in the future, as many natural resources and traditional food sources begin to be used up, and the population continues to swell.

And apparently insects are an obvious choice, despite much of the Western world being squeamish about them.

Bugs are a high source of protein and calcium, and provide just as much nutritional value as traditional meat, according to research from the Dutch Wageningen University.

Morgaine Gaye, food futurologist, said: “Things like crickets and grasshoppers will be ground down and used as an ingredient in things like burgers”.

Seaweed may also feature heavily, due to the fact it can be grown in the ocean.  This means it doesn’t use up landspace or fresh water, both of which are running out.

Both insects and seaweed could be made to resemble current food, so most people won’t even know the difference.  Scientists at Sheffield Hallam University have been able to use seaweed granules to replace salt in processed foods, which is much healthier.
