With the film due for release in July, it comes with no surprise that Disney Interactive Studios will be releasing a Cars 2 videogame to accompany the Pixar animated movie of the same name.
It would be fair to theorise that movie-game tie-ins aren’t always brilliant, but with Senior Producer Jon Warner on board (Producer of the excellent Toy Story 3 game from last year), Cars 2: The Video Game is looking like it could be yet another brilliant tie-in game to prove that theory wrong.
Carrying on the storyline from the film, Cars 2 will let you take control of 20 different characters from the film world, including (of course) the fan favourites.
Taking part in exciting training missions at the international training centre known as CHROME (Command Headquarters for Recon Operations and Motorized Espionage), and racing in tournaments to become the fastest race car in the world, are just a couple of the things you can fill your time with.
Playing single or multi-player, you unlock rewards and achievements throughout. Using your motor-espionage skills to achieve your goals has never sounded so fun.
Lead Producer Jon Warner explained why Cars 2: The video Game is going to deserve your time and money: "It’s different to previous ‘Cars’ games. I think people are going to be surprised because it’s a very different experience.
"It takes place on a larger world stage, places like Italy, London and Tokyo; it is essentially a racing game but with a twist and new types of levels."
The developers at Disney interactive have been putting a lot of effort into creating an experience that lives up to the high standard that Pixar set out in their movies. "We work very closely with every aspect of the game.
"We would start by working on idea that we liked and then we would start the building process. We would create the levels, play them from start to end to ensure quality and then sit down and discuss it; we would make the changes and then finally move on," explains Jon.
Jon also explains that working with Pixar has helped to create something he hopes people will enjoy: "It’s cool to be working on products that have such a huge appeal and that are of such high quality. Pixar are the masters of storytelling. It’s really wonderful to work with that quality of people; they are so open to us.
"They were really quite pleased with how that worked out. They offered their aspects and assets to us. They gave us all the models for each individual car. What a great experience that has been, they have made it so much easier for us."
Just like anything in the world, a great game comes about from people who care about the product they are making.
Jon Warner seems no exception to this rule, and if what he says is true about the importance of expanding on story and creativity in games, this one looks to be shaping up very nicely. We look forward to getting our hands on it, and will let you know if it lives up to our expectations as soon as possible!
Available on Xbox 360,PS3, Wii, DS, PC and Mac. Cars 2: The video Game is due for release in July this year.
