The Indiegogo campaign has been set up to raise funds to manufacture the first production units of the newly reimagined version of the classic console, simply named The 64, with an initial target of $150,000.

According to the fundraising page: "The 64 is here and has brought its handheld cousin along for the ride! The world's bestselling single computer model has been reimagined in both computer and handheld console versions!

"The 64 is an exciting and respectful reimagining of the original home computer, the Commodore C64. Developed using the latest (old) technology, the highly passionate team behind The 64 is excited to bring you not only a classic desktop version of THE 64 but also a brand new handheld version meaning classic gaming, on the go!"

It will come with a joystick, a selection of classic games and brand new content.

The project is headed up by video game industry veteran Darren Melbourne.

This campaign comes after Sir Clive Sinclair reached his Crowdfunding goal to raise £100,000 to manufacture his new Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega+ handheld console.

The 75-year-old inventor - who created the ZX Spectrum home computer in 1982 - and Retro Computers Ltd launched their fundraising campaign for the gadget on the Indiegogo Crowdfunding website in February and they achieved their £100,000 within 48 hours and raised £155,677 in less than 3 days.

The sum for the Vega+ now exceeds the sum raised during the entire two-month campaign last time round to fund the original Vega console.

The Vega+ is based on the ZX Spectrum and will come with a colour LCD screen and 1,000 games built in for a retail price of around £100.
