Following a record-breaking month in March 2017, sales fell back a little over the course of April, with global revenues from video games downloaded to PCs and consoles or played online earning as much as $7.7 billion.

By contrast, in March, the headline figure reached an eye-watering $8 billion, analysis conducted by gaming intelligence firm SuperData shows.

However, in the broader context of the gaming industry, the figures for April represent a nine percent increase from 12 months earlier.

Speaking to CNBC, SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen said that 'Pokemon Go' has played a significant role in the recent upturn in sales of digital video games.

He explained: "That really blew people away. You're going to start seeing more of that. People are going to try to copy that formula."

He said, too, that another trend worth watching are Chinese mobile developers looking to break into the US market with their impressive-looking mobile games.

In April, the mobile segment witnessed an eight percent sales growth, which served to slightly offset the decline of the premium PC and pay-to-play online games market.
