Double Dragon IV

The first instalment in the side-scrolling beat 'em up franchise hit arcades in 1987 and went onto become an early bench mark for the genre and was followed by numerous sequels and was ported onto the consoles and home computers of the era, including the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, ZX Spectrum, Amiga and the Nintendo Game Boy.

Original developer Technos Japan folded in 1996 and the rights to the series were passed to Arc System Works who brought martial arts experts Billy and Jimmy Lee back to battle an even bigger array of thugs with their fists and feet and various weapons with the arrival of the game on Steam and PlayStation 4 in January.

Arc System Works - one of Japan's longest standing studios, responsible for the Sega Master System port way back in 1988 - have now confirmed it will now come to Switch on September 7, with a traditional one-player or two-player story mode, which will follow on directly from 'Double Dragon II: The Revenge'

The latter saw Billy and Jimmy Lee go on a mission to avenge Billy's girlfriend Marian after she is shot dead by the Black Warriors gangland leader Willy in an act of retaliation for his defeat at the hands of the Lee brothers in the first game.

There will be an additional two-player mode which will allow gamers to fight each other as Billy and Jimmy or as enemy characters unlocked by playing the story campaign.

Tower mode is inspired by the late great Bruce Lee's final film 'Game of Death' and requires the player to fight through multiple floors of an enemy building, defeating as many enemies as possible.
