UK games industry pioneer Andrew Hewson, who is involved in the title, is aiming for his fourth stretch goal in the last 48 hours of his successful Kickstarter campaign raising £18,744 which is in excess of the initial £15,000 fundraising target.

Developed by indie developer Jonathan Port - aka Four5Six Pixel - 'Hyper Sentinel' is inspired by the classic shoot 'em ups he played in his youth.

Four5Six Pixel has partnered with Huey Games - a new company founded by industry veterans Rob Hewson and John Ogden, who are helping with design feedback, porting of the game to various platforms and are handling publishing duties.

Hewson, CEO and Creative Director of Huey Games Ltd, said: "The enthusiasm backers have shown for Hyper Sentinel has been hugely exciting for us, and to hit so many of our stretch goals already is wonderful. Now we can really focus on delivering the best game possible."

Discussing the influences on the game, Port added: "The most obvious visual influence is 'Uridium'. In terms of gameplay, major influences are 'Defender' for its frantic action and speed, 'Tornado Low Level' (ZX Spectrum) where you could sweep back the plane wings to speed boost. I loved 'Cybernoid' and its dramatic explosions. More recently 'Resogun', with the way the enemies surround and suffocate you if you don't keep on top."

The game is described as a "love letter to old-school arcade action and the computer shoot 'em ups of the 1980s, but supercharged with beautiful 4K graphics, awesome power-ups, epic boss battles and a heart-pumping SID style soundtrack all running at a blistering 60 frames-per-second!"

For video game backers who are obsessed with nostalgia, they can also get the game on Limited edition USB Cassette - which also comes complete with retro gaming videos and artwork, demos of other upcoming indie titles and a detailed developer diary.

A free demo of 'Hyper Sentinel' can be downloaded for PC, Mac, Android and iOS from the Kickstarter page.
