The social network messaging board, which is available on most Wii U and 3Ds games, will no longer be functional as of November 8 as it became "chaos" and unmanageable with many users taking advantage of it and posting rude messages to one another.

Speaking about the highs and lows of Miiverse, which was launched in 2012, Tom Phillips of Eurogamer told the BBC: "It was chaotic but a moderately successful experiment in creating a social network.

"The highlight was some of the incredible art - it was certainly the best of what Miiverse had to offer - but it was always a headache for Nintendo to police.

"Some of the moderation was entrusted to an algorithm you could draw a penis shape and it would be deleted."

Miiverse was also not available on their latest console Nintendo Switch.

The announcement comes shortly after Kimishima Tatsumi, the president of the technology firm, revealed that Nintendo Switch's support website will be crucial for the much-anticipated new console.

He said, too, that a price range of $18 to $27 a year for the online service is worth the annual fee.

Speaking earlier this month, he explained: "So far we have announced that from the fall, Nintendo's online service will be a paid for service, and we have announced that the price range will be between 2,000 and 3,000 yen [$18 to $27] per year for that service.

"We've also announced that friends will be able to play online, and they'll be able to use a dedicated smartphone application that enables voice chat during those games.

"More details are forthcoming, but I just want to make sure that everyone understands that we will be going above and beyond to make sure that our customers are getting a service that is worth paying for, so we're paying special attention to make sure that this is, again, a valuable service that they will appreciate form us."
