Producer Marc Platt has struck a deal with SEGA to make a movie based on its arcade and console ninja franchise which was hugely popular in the 1980s.

'Shinobi', with main hero Joe Musashi, first launched in arcades in 1987 before coming to the Master System home console.

Eleven games have followed since with the most recent title 'Shinobi' - known as 'Shinobi 3D' in Japan - coming out on handheld system the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

But fans will soon be able to see ninja warrior Musashi battling wrong doers on the big screen when it's developed into a blockbuster.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Platt said: "We love the 'Shinobi' games and believe that the world of ninjas has never been properly explored on screen. We now have the opportunity to do just that. With 'Shinobi', we hope to make a film that honours the essence of the games and brings this fascinating world to life for moviegoing audiences."

But while some remain sceptical of the potential success a game to film can have, it's not the first time SEGA has tried to bring it's gaming titles to the big screen - 'Stories' was talked about by the firm's in-house development team in 2014 but nothing has been heard since.

Other video game characters to make the jump to the big screen include Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, who was fist played by Angelina Jolie and will be portrayed next by Alicia Vikander, Super Mario, who was portrayed by Bob Hoskins in the 1993 movie 'Super Mario Bros.', while the 'Resident Evil' video game series has become a suffessful film franchise starring Milla Jovovich.

Although no plot details from the 'Shinobi' film are yet known the original game follows the life journey of Joe - a weak boy who first entered the dojo of the Oboro clan at a young age and gradually, through tireless practice and dedication, worked himself up to become the most skilled and respected ninja of his clan.

His peaceful existence in the mountains of Japan is shattered when the ninja crime syndicate Zeed rises to power and attempts to revert Japan into the Sengoku period of civil war when the ninja thrived.
