The Japanese video game makers are in talks with potential partners about developing films and video production, and president Tatsumi Kimishima is keen for the company to produce motion pictures based on "popular" games.

Speaking to Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, he said: "We'd like to use IP that is popular with everyone."

While the news might be music to the ears of Nintendo fans who are desperate for a Super Mario movie to be made, Tatsumi has remained coy on what the subject matter will be.

He added: "I can't say 'it'll be Mario' -- just that we'll do things that people will be familiar with."

The publication also reports that Nintendo's movies could well be 3D animation.

This latest news comes after live-action movie 'Super Mario Bros.', based on the 1985 Nintendo video game of the same name, was released in 1993.

The motion picture starred Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, and Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy.

In the film the siblings joined forces with Daisy to try to defeat Koopa, but the movie wasn't a huge box office success.

There have previously been rumours that a 'Legend of Zelda' live-action series could be in the works but that was denied by Nintendo.
