Two-thirds of all hardware sales in September were made through Nintendo.

The gaming giant didn't think the Nintendo Switch would be a success before it launched, but they've been proved wrong after the new console, along with the Nintendo 3DS systems and the Super Nintendo Entertainment Classic Edition raked in huge sums for the company last month.

Nintendo Switch was the top-selling current-gen console for the month in the U.S., according to the NPD Group.

What's more, Nintendo has sold more than 2 million Switch consoles in the U.S. alone and 4.7 million Switch worldwide as of June 30, according to the last figures released by the company.

The latest console from the gaming giants brings handheld and home console gaming together has been hugely popular since its release six months ago, but Tsunekazu Ishihara, the CEO of The Pokémon Company, had admitted he didn't think the console would succeed because he couldn't see people "carrying around a game's console" in the world of mobile gaming.

He said: "I told Nintendo that Switch wouldn't be a success before it went on sale because I thought that, in the age of the smartphone, no one would carry around a game console. It's obvious I was wrong. I came to realise the key to a successful game is quite simple: software with absolute quality leads sales of hardware. Playing style can be flexible if the software is attractive enough."

Forthcoming games to be released on Nintendo Switch are 'Fire Emblem Warriors' on October 20, 'Super Mario Odyssey' on October 27, 'Doom' and 'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' from Bethesda Game Studios on November 10 and November 17, respectively, and 'Xenoblade Chronicles 2' on December 1.
