The feature has previously been used across the gaming giant's Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U consoles, but has been perceived as being cumbersome and has, therefore, been ditched in time for the launch of Nintendo's latest console.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo America, told CNET: "There are no friend codes within what we're doing."

Despite this, it remains to be seen whether the tech firm will look to introduce a replacement system.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, the gaming company revealed that it expects to sell "two million" Nintendo Switch consoles in the first month of it going on sale.

The hotly anticipated new console is slated to arrive on March 3, and Reggie revealed Nintendo has already taken steps to ensure that anyone who wants to get their hands on the console will be able to do so.

He said: "Two million for essentially the first month is a huge number, especially when you look and see that this is not peak seasonality.

"This is essentially the first three weeks of March.

"Our focus is making sure that the consumer who wants to buy a Nintendo Switch can buy a Nintendo Switch."

Reggie's confidence in the new machine is based on the success of the Nintendo NES Classic, which sold out around the globe in record time, leaving many gamers walking away empty-handed and disappointed.
