The title got a mention during Nintendo's E3 2017 presentation and its logo was unveiled which left some fans hoping to see the game as early as next year, but that looks to be in doubt following the games giant's latest earnings report.

In the document, Nintendo revealed when a number of its forthcoming titles would be released, with the likes of 'Kirby' and 'Yoshi' slated for 2018 drops, and 'Pokemon' listed for "2018 or later".

However, 'Metroid Prime 4' simply has "TBD" written after it, suggesting it may not make it next year.

It comes after Charlie Scibetta, senior director of corporate communications at Nintendo America, recently appeared to suggest the game would be out in 2018.

Earlier this year, he said: "We've announced a nice line-up through this year, and next year we have some big games coming with Metroid Prime 4. 2018 will be around 'Metroid', 'Kirby', 'Yoshi', new 'Pokemon' game has been announced.

"We feel good about the line-up for this year and beyond."

But Nintendo later clarified his comments, insisting he meant "2018 and beyond".

'Metroid Prime 4' will be the first Metroid Prime game since the Nintendo Wii title 'Metroid Prime 3: Corruption' dropped in 2007.

The original sci-fi action-adventure video game, titled 'Metroid', was released in August 1986 in Japan, and it later dropped on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in North America in August 1987 before coming out in Europe in January 1988.

The title follows galactic bounty hunter Samus Aran who travels around the planet Zebes trying to retrieve Metroid organisms stolen by Space Pirates.
