PlayStation bosses have heaped praise on the new Nintendo Switch console.

The two household consoles might be at war with one another over sales figures, but PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has nothing but nice words to say about the rival console which was released earlier this year, as he says its what the gaming community "has been waiting for."

He said: "[The Switch is] a great success for Nintendo. It's definitely what that fanbase has been waiting for."

And whilst Nintendo are one of the biggest competitors of PlayStation's creators at Sony - with the other being Microsoft's Xbox consoles - Shawn insists the sales of the Switch haven't made his console any less popular.

He added to Time magazine: "When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side."

Shawn isn't the only PlayStation boss to praise the Switch - which is almost at three million units sold after being released in March - either, as boss Jim Ryan recently dubbed the console as "interesting", but said the real test would be how it copes when Christmas comes around, as the console has already sold out.

He said: "Switch is interesting. You should never, ever doubt Nintendo. It'll be interesting to see how they do this holiday. They're clearly out of stock. They've had some really big first party franchises to support them - 'Zelda' [ Switch exclusive game 'Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild'] is so powerful."

Meanwhile, Jim also claimed that PlayStation's own handheld console, the PS Vita, won't be getting a revival in the west.

He said: "The Vita still sells in Japan and some parts of Asia, but it's not an active line for us in the west."
