The gaming giant has been a major figure in the market for years, but it appears PlayStation's appeal continues to increase, with PlayStation Network boss Eric Lempel revealing its impressive performance on Black Friday during an interview with CNBC.

He explained: "We had the biggest Black Friday in PlayStation history.

"We sold more consoles than we ever have in our 22-year history, and [PlayStation] Plus is a natural addition to that purchase."

The popular console was heavily discounted on Black Friday, as is usual, and it appears many consumers couldn't pass up the opportunity to get their hands on a copy of the machine themselves.

Despite competition from the likes of the Xbox One, the PlayStation brand remains in rude health, according to Lempel, who admitted that the PlayStation 4 continues to attract consumer demand.

He shared: "The PlayStation 4 business is thriving. We're having a phenomenal year."

Meanwhile, in April this year, PlayStation announced that it had sold as many as 2.9 million copies of the PlayStation 4 over a three-month spell.

The figure was up an impressive 2.3 million during the same period in 2016.
