The hit game, which was adapted into a children's TV series and playing cards, looks set to be made into motion picture, following on from its debut movie, 'Pokémon The First Movie' in 1999.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a source has revealed Legendary have emerged as the frontrunners to win the win after Warner Bros., who were one of the early favourites.

The Pokémon company - who manage the franchise - have been scouring Hollywood to find a potential suitor for the live-action film, which will see Ash Ketchum return with his electrifying side-kick Pikachu.

Sony and Warner Bros. are among competitors hoping to claim the rights in a secret auction.

What's more, there is growing speculation Legendary and Warner Bros could even join forces, following the success of 'Godzilla' in 2014, with 'Godzilla 2' planned for 2018 and 'Godzilla Vs. Kong' for 2020.

This comes after tens of thousands of Pokemon fans petitioned for Danny DeVito to voice Pikachu in the upcoming 'Great Detective Pikachu' spin-off game, but the 'Matilda' actor wasn't quite so positive when asked about the subject at a screening of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' at The Paley Center.

A tweet on the Paley Centre account read: "Audience Q:Will Danny DeVito voice the Detective Pikachu videogame? Danny says "No" and asks what it is, "What the F is Pokemon?" #PaleyLive (sic)"
