Game developers Niantic - who created the mobile app which lets users catch the popular pocket monsters around the world - launched the Water Festival event on Wednesday (22.03.17), which enabled trainers to catch more water-type Pokémon.

What Niantic didn't tell users in the announcement of the event, however, was that the event also included the ability to stumble upon rare shiny versions of Magikarp, which appear to be bright yellow instead of the usual red colour.

In addition, the shiny Magikarp can be evolved using 400 candies, which will transform it into the shiny version of Gyarados, which is red instead of blue.

Users from the Pokémon Go and Silph Road Reddit communities were the first to report the shiny finds, and as of yet Niantic is yet to officially comment on the additions.

As of the time of writing, it is unknown whether any other shiny Pokémon have been added to the game since the beginning of the event.

Meanwhile, an update for the app last month added the ability to catch 80 new Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver video games - as well as Pokemon with gender-specific variations.

In addition to the new creatures, developers have added some new features to make enhance gameplay.

Players will be able to evolve their Pokemon in more ways than ever - some Pokemon originally discovered in the Kanto region will soon be able to evolve into Pokemon that inhabit the Johto region and these can be transformed at PokeStops.
