The technology chief has revealed that the fifth edition of the game-changing console is not set for release in the near future, although he hasn't denied Sony intends to launch a PS5.

Asked about the prospect, Shawn told Golem.de that it will "probably be some time" fans are given a first glimpse of the console.

The PS4 was released in 2013 and, since then, speculation has continued to swirl about whether Sony planned to bring out another edition in the money-spinning series.

Sony's software product development head Scott Rhode said in early 2016 that the firm would soon turn its gaze towards a new release.

He shared: "Very soon we'll start thinking about what we'll do next. That's the culture at Sony. We always have to do something that's bigger and better than what's already been done."

Meanwhile, Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida said the future of the console rests in the hands of its developers.

The tech chief explained: "If they still feel that we need more machine power - 'we want to realise this and that and that, but we cannot do it with the PS4'. There's a good reason to have the PS5 so developers can create their vision."
