'Super Mario Odyssey' will contain 2D sections inspired by the classic NES titles.

The hotly anticipated Nintendo Switch game will let players enjoy some retro Mario action when they travel down secret pipes and must guide the moustached plumber past Bullet Bills and stomping Goombas whilst collecting gold coins.

It is not the only nod to Mario's past as Pauline, the girlfriend he had to rescue from the clutches of a giant ape in 'Donkey Kong', also appears in the game.

Since being held captive by Donkey Kong, Pauline has become mayor of New Donk City, and gives Mario a mission to find musicians to play at a club.

It's unclear how big a part Pauline will play in the new game, but with Nintendo including 2D sections and the world containing a number of skyscrapers, perhaps we'll see a Donkey Kong/King Kong homage at some point in the game.

'Super Mario Odyssey' producer Yoshiaki Koizumi has spoken about how much Nintendo still value the 2D Mario games, and accepts that many gamers have nostalgic affection for the titles from the NES and SNES eras, whilst modern players still enjoy the simplicity of the design of those adventures.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Koizumi said: "I think historically, just as a starting point, a lot of people have the 2D Mario games as a place where they become familiar with the series and some of the concepts; because they are so easy to play, so easy to understand.

"Whereas when we made the shift into 3D games with 'Super Mario 64', at that time I think we did notice that there was a slightly fewer number of people playing. We didn't necessarily have the exact same number of players slide right on over."
