The side-scrolling, endless runner video game, which was released by Nintendo for iOS in December 2016, has topped the list of the most popular free games for both iPhone and iPad users in 2017.
Describing the game on their Apple page, they shared: "A new kind of Mario game that you can play with one hand ... Clear the 24 exciting courses to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, waiting in his castle at the end. There are many ways to enjoy the courses, such as collecting the 3 different types of colored coins or by competing for the highest score against your friends. You can try courses 1-1 to 1-4 for free."
Other popular games include 'Word Cookies!', 'Paper.io' and 'Color Switch', whilst on the paid side 'Heads Up! topped the list for the iPhone and 'Minecraft' for the iPad.
Meanwhile, the number one selling iPhone App of 2017 was The Official DVSA Theory Test Kit for Car Drivers whilst for iPad users, it was 'Procreate'. WhatsApp Messenger topped the free iPhone App of the year chart and YouTube was the number one free iPad App of 2017.
In 2017, the App Store also became the home of some of the most-played multiplayer games in the world including 'The Elder Scrolls: Legends', 'Red Tides', 'Star Wars: Force Arena' and 'Stormbound'.
