'Super Mario Run' was a bigger first-day seller than 'Pokemon Go'.

The new mobile game - Nintendo's first on the format - was released on Thursday (15.12.16) and was downloaded more than 10 million times in its first 24 hours, making it 10 times more popular than its Niantic rival.

According to Polygon, further data from App Annie suggested Mario and friends' game made $4 million in its first day, and 20 million pre-registered for the title.

'Pokemon Go' was downloaded around 900,000 times on its first day of release.

But the game did manage to reach 5.6 million downloads by its third day and has become a huge mobile game.

However, it was only available in three countries initially, which pales into insignificance in comparison to the 150 nations where people can download 'Super Mario Run'.

But Nintendo's first mobile game is only available on iOS as yet and is set to drop on Android next year, while 'Pokemon Go' was available to play on both operating systems.

There has also been a big difference in terms of advertising for the two games as Pikachu's title turned up on mobiles without much warning.

This is a complete contrast to 'Super Mario Run' which Nintendo have backed with a huge marketing campaign.
