Paramount has optioned the rights to a television show based on EA's first-person shooter video game series, and one of the series producers, Michael Sugar, has expressed his excitement at the prospect of working on a project with a ready-made fan base.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Anonymous Content producer Sugar said: "'Battlefield' has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation.

"Together with EA and Paramount TV, we'll develop the 'Battlefield' TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly 15 years."

The hugely popular video game series has been played by more than 50 million players as of 2012, across 11 games and 12 expansion packs.

The series focuses on large maps, teamwork and vehicle warfare compared to many other first person shooter games, and it usually focuses on larger online multiplayer battles.

Playing in squads has also become a major element of games in the series, and since 'Battlefield 2142' the series has included dog tags for each player killed using a knife.

No details have yet been released on where in the 'Battlefield' timeline the series will take place, but it has been speculated that it could be a World War II drama.

The next game in the series, 'Battlefield 1', takes place in the muddy trenches of World War I and is due for release on October 21.
