The program launched with the Xbox One in 2013 and guides fitness enthusiasts through exercise regimes overseen by celebrities.

Announcing the plan, Microsoft said: "As a service, Xbox Fitness has continually evolved since it launched on Xbox One, with new content and ongoing updates.

"Given the service relies on providing you with new and exciting content regularly, Microsoft has given much consideration to the reality updating the service regularly in order to sustain it.

"Therefore, the decision has been made to scale back our support for Xbox Fitness over the next year."

Sales of the program have been suspended immediately and there will be a complete suspension of the service in 12 months' time.

Players of the program are able to monitor their progress using a Kinect sensor, but it appears that the service has proven to be unprofitable and Microsoft has, therefore, decided to suspend the service.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, it was reported Microsoft are on the cusp of announcing their next set of Xbox game consoles.

Indeed, a game developer, who works for a well-known European game studio, let slip to PC news site Ars Technica what his company was working on.

He shared: "We are working on an Xbox One VR title for 2017, and the official E3 exhibitor list now has a category for Xbox One Virtual Reality developers".
