Cancerous substance in cocaine?

24-11-2006 14:23

Drug users have been cautioned that the drug is more commonly being cut with a chemical which places them at a 'very high risk of getting cancer'.

Phenacetin, a forbidden pain killer which has been connected to kidney and liver cancer, is currently the number one cutting chemical used by drug dealers to stock out the drug discloses the professionals from the UK's Serious and Organised Crime Agency.

The carcinogenic substance has a "numbing" impact like cocaine which hides that the drug is not pure.

Soca divulge that prices of cocaine on the street are dropping while wholesale ones are rising because the Class A drug is being purchased at a reduced standard - meaning addicts are consuming more phenacetin.

A spokesperson for the body is quoted as saying in the Metro newspaper: 'The average purity of street cocaine used to be around 30 or 40 per cent now we finding it more commonly between 20 and 30 per cent. 'People could be unwittingly exposing themselves to a very high risk of getting cancer by taking cocaine.'
