How appropriate then, that National Smile Month is currently taking place!  Sponsored by the British Dental Health Foundation, the aim of the week is simple: to improve the public’s oral health and make sure their smiles are something to be proud of.

There are many simple and quick ways of taking care of your teeth and you really will reap the benefits, so here are our top tips for best oral health.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, don't rush. Take enough time to do a thorough job

Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to help prevent cavities

Flossing after brushing each time helps remove plaque from between the teeth, and helps to improve your breath

Avoid eating too much sugar and drinking sugary drinks such as soda, sweetened teas, or fruit juices.

Also avoid acidic foods and drink such as oranges or orange juice, as these can promote tooth decay and enamel wear. If you do consume acidic foods, brush your teeth afterwards

Know when to replace your toothbrush. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed

Visit your dentist regularly, even if you don’t think there is anything wrong, at least once every six months. Your dentist can spot any potential problems before they become serious

For fresh breath … Oraldiet (£6.45. Available from revital.co.uk), to restore the oral mouth flora, which is vitally important to maintain a healthy mouth, teeth and gums. Oraldiet, is an innovative oral probiotic lozenge that contains the probiotic lactobacillus reuteri, and aloe vera gel, both included to ensure that your mouth flora is restored back to a healthy condition, thereby reducing bad bacteria and bad breath.

For painful mouth ulcers... Bye Mouth Ulcer! (£7.95 for 15ml. Available from revital.co.uk), a clinically proven treatment, designed to provide immediate and direct relief from the pain and burning associated with mouth ulcers, and encourage faster healing.
