David Cameron commissioned the debate

It's the small things in life that make you the happiest.

Some people aren't fond of this saying, claming it's only people who have a comfortable financial situation who can say this, but new research indicates otherwise.

Health, friends and family have topped the list in a debate asking people how they measure happiness.

Around 34,000 people were asked, "what is well being?" and "what things in life matter to you?"

The findings of the report, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are part of a wider programme to discover what makes British people feel happy.

The survey was commisioned by David Cameron, it was designed to help him develop future policies.

But critics have claimed that the £2million it takes to run every year is a waste of money because the results given are quite obvious.

National statistician Jil Matheson, who compiled the report, told Sky News: "The debate has helped us identify the key areas that matter most and will help to ensure the measures we use will be relevant not only to government but also to the wider public.

"This is crucial to allow for effective development and appraisal of policy for individuals to use information to identify ways of improving wellbeing and to allow for assessment of how society is doing overall."
