How many do you eat?

This week’s super food is the banana – one of the most popular fruits in the world, often a staple in many countries.

The fruit is thought to have originated in Malaysia, but now bananas are now grown in most tropical and subtropical countries with many different varieties on offer.

If you’re struggling with your New Year health kick and need something to keep you full till lunch, cut up a banana with your porridge in the morning as it’s filled with Resistant Starch (RS). This is a healthy carbohydrate that fills you up and boosts your metabolism.

Bananas are an excellent source of vitamin B6 which is important for cognitive function and immune function. This vitamin is also beneficial for healthy skin and hair.

They are also a good source of fiber, vitamin C, manganese and potassium – which helps lower blood pressure.

Research has shown consuming two bananas provides enough energy for an intense 90 minute workout, so don’t forget yours before you head to the gym.
