Brits aim to lose over 23 million stone

For many people the January detox is as much of a tradition as Christmas itself.

This year Brits aim to lose over 23 million stone and almost seven million want to drink ‘considerably less.’ But with 20% of people resigned to giving up in the first week of the year, it seems giving up has become as much of a tradition.

December indulgence is the reason behind most people’s pledges with some setting themselves huge goals for the year ahead.

One in five people want to lose two stone over the course of the year while some people set themselves more short-term plans, such as making January ‘alcohol free.’

Ditching the drink has always been a favourite resolution but over the last few years the motives behind doing so have changed. Over 47% of people choose to do so to lose weight, whereas 45% do it for other health reasons.

Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of Drinkaware, which aims to give people advice about alcohol, said: "Millions of adults want to lose weight in the New Year and cutting back on alcohol can be a really effective way of shedding the pounds and getting the most out of life at the same time.

"People can be quite shocked when they discover the calorie content of their favourite tipple, so this is a really useful way of getting us all to think about how much we're drinking."

According to Drinkaware, the top ten most popular resolutions Brits have set for 2010 include:

Lose weight - 48%

Get fit - 29%

Live life to the full - 22%

Get out of debt - 18%

Have more sex - 15%

See family/friends more - 14%

Drink less alcohol - 14%

Change job - 12%

Give up chocolate/sweets - 11%

Quit smoking - 10
