When was the last time you were on a diet?

When was the last time you were on a diet?

The country’s biggest dieting spots have been revealed as men and women try to fight the flab and get to a healthy weight.

The survey revealed that while women go on more diets in their lifetime, men stick to diets for longer than women do.

The study, conducted by www.UKMedix.com, formed part of the company’s wider research into Britons’ attitudes surrounding weight and body image. 2,841 British people took part in the study, all of whom were aged 18, with an equal split between men and women.

73% of women admitted that they have once dieted and 59% of men stated that they had too, with women lasting an average of 12 days and men being typically longer at 6 weeks per diet.

In order to delve deeper into their dieting habits, all respondents were then asked to disclose on average how many diets they had undertaken during their lifetime. The average answer given by women was 17 diets in their lifetime, compared to the male equivalent of only five.

All respondents who had dieted were asked to disclose which area of the UK they lived in. The results were compiled by researchers to reveal the UK’s top diet spots. The top dieting areas, split by men and women, were revealed as follows:

Women

  1. Essex – 24%
  2. Brighton – 15%
  3. London – 13%
  4. Manchester – 11%
  5. Sheffield – 9%

Men

  1. Newcastle – 31%
  2. Cardiff – 19%
  3. Glasgow – 14%
  4. Leeds – 12%
  5. London – 8%

Sarah Bailey of UKMedix.com commented on the findings:

“Essex has gained a bit of a reputation in recent years as a glamourous and appearance-centred hot spot in the UK, so it’s no surprise that they are the UK’s top diet spot for women. It’s also interesting that men from Newcastle are the UK’s biggest dieters, showing that maybe the high profile reality TV shows set in both has an impact on the residents. Perhaps they are preparing for a career in the shows themselves!

“It is surprising, however, to see that men adhere to their diets for longer than women. It would seem that women in the UK are more likely to give in to their cravings whilst men are strictly sticking to their diets!”
