What sort of effect does your commute have on you?

It's cold outside, the wind is playing up and the chances are you've just come back from your Christmas break - it's no wonder the commute is getting you down really.

Almost half of Britain’s commuters are desperate for a change, unhappy and left wanting to go straight back to bed by the time they get to work.

That’s according to a study of 2,000 people commissioned by evian who are inviting people to Live young this January.

The poll found that over a third of the UK would describe their commute as boring and nearly a fifth describe it as being ‘like Groundhog Day’, whilst 16% wish they could simply sleep though it.

88% of commuters estimated they would achieve up to 30 minutes extra work in their day if their commute was more enjoyable. Yet a whopping 48% admitted never actually doing anything to improve their route and have never made any changes to liven it up.

Chartered Counselling and Health Psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos advised weary workers to try to make small changes to improve their routine, saying: “A stressful daily commute can really impact on your overall sense of wellbeing by the time you get to work. However, changing your routine by trying a new route or mode of transport could give you a real boost. I would strongly recommend anyone suffering from the January blues to adopt a Live young attitude, try something new, and get a fresh perspective on life.”

70% of respondents thought trying new things on their commute would help them feel more fulfilled. Some simple Live young changes could be trying a new scenic route, getting off the bus a stop early and walking or making friends with fellow passengers.

“January can feel uninspiring after the festive December period, so as part of the ‘Live young’ campaign we are encouraging  those heading back to work, to step outside their regular routine and try something new. We couldn’t think of a better time to inject some ‘Live young ‘attitude into the working day. Hopefully evian can help to make everyone’s January be a bit less blue and a lot more pink!” says Alex Valk External Communications Manager for evian.
