More than two thirds of people aren't using a condom when on a one night stand, according to new research.

What's more, almost three quarters of those surveyed confessed that STIs were the last thing on their mind in this scenario.

The new study has revealed that two thirds of one night stands are conducted without the use of condoms, leaving both partners vulnerable to contracting STIs, in addition to potentially running the risk of an unplanned pregnancy.

When these respondents were asked if any concerns about STIs had crossed their mind during the experience, three quarters said that they had not given their own or their partner’s sexual health a second thought when the one night stand was taking place. However, when all respondents were asked if they thought it was important to use contraception which would protect against STIs during a one night stand, almost all of the people taking part stated that it was.

What's more shocking are the reasons given for not using a condom as protection, with the most popular answer being 'the other person didn't seem like they would have an STI', followed by 'We forgot as we were caught in the moment'. But if you're unlucky that's not the only thing you'll be caught with.

When asked if they would be likely to use a condom in future, if they were to have any more one night encounters, less than half said that they would. The remaining 54% confessed that they were likely to continue having casual relations without any protection, despite the risks to their own and the other person’s health.

Sarah Bailey of UKMedix.com commented on the findings:

“These are shocking findings which we really need to take seriously. As a nation, we are fully educated and informed about the risks of unprotected sex and, quite frankly, it is just not good enough that we ignore all the warnings purely because of laziness or poor preparation. The future looks very bleak if we continue in this vein.

“We are lucky to have an incredible health service with the NHS, offering free testing and treatment, meaning that we are in a very fortunate position, but that’s not to say that we should take it for granted and behave irresponsibly in the belief that it will be resolved for us later down the line if needed. STIs spread incredibly quickly – and no wonder, with 43% of us having regular one night stands and so many not bothering with protection! No matter how many drinks you’ve had, how squeaky clean your partner may appear to be or how often you hook up, everyone has to take responsibility for their health first and foremost.”
