Have you considered a fitness bootcamp?

Have you considered a fitness bootcamp?

Why do you think fitness and wellbeing boot camps are such a good idea?

Men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes all come together to achieve great weight loss and boot camps are a great way of providing high energy, inspiration and team camaraderie with humour. With experts on board they provide the tools and the education to translate healthy thoughts into action which they can take home and make permanent lifestyle changes. Boot camps are packed with fun and energising activities. A typical day may include hiking, circuits, boxing, team games, aqua exercise, yoga or pilates with use of both indoor facilities e.g. studios, pool and extensive grounds.

What sort of things will people get from going on one?

Not only can it change your body but it can change your life. Weight loss, reduction in body fat and increased fitness levels are common results. However many people cite decreased stress and anxiety levels plus psychological strength and belief. Physical exercise releases endorphins the body’s natural high makes you feel good with a positive approach to everyday life. During a Boot camp residents also achieve more that they thought possible breaking through mental and physical barriers. Increased confidence and self-esteem can transfer into all aspects of life. They feel more motivated than ever before, full of energy and reinvigorated.

They are educational programmes to meet the weight loss needs of our guests. They are realistic and sustainable programmes and not seen as quick fixes but they kick start of their weight loss journey. What has grown in particular is the success of these group based programmes. Groups of men and women from different backgrounds join together with the same goal: weight loss. The success comes from the group camaraderie and motivation within the ‘team’

Do they encourage people to have a more healthy lifestyle, or do you think people go back to unhealthy living?

With experts on board they provide the tools and the education to translate healthy thoughts into action which they can then take home and make permanent lifestyle changes. However ongoing support is very important. Let’s face it reality, back in the real world maintaining healthy habits can be extremely difficult. You are constantly tempted to make unhealthy food choices as junk food and processed foods coupled together with limited time and other barriers to exercise can be challenging.  People do often lose their way on their weight loss journey and it is often a boot camp or another boot camp that gives them the kick start or the motivation to get on track again. It takes 21 days to change a habit so simple realistic steps are required to improve their lifestyle. Adopting an 80:20 lifestyle being good 80% of the time means that the old lifestyle doesn’t shouldn’t take over.

What do you think is the most important thing to go away from a boot camp having learnt?

Keep it simple, realistic and fun in terms of the lifestyle changes they choose and what they can achieve. Our programmes are based around education, providing guests with the knowledge to improve their health, their wellbeing, reduce weight, de stress whatever their personal goal is we provide them with information to make informed choices/decisions. There is no magic formula for weight loss or increased fitness and trends and fads will come and go. At Champneys we embrace: Moderation, Balance and variety.

Why is it important for people to change up their fitness routine and try new things?

Finding an exercise routine that you like doing and are able to do may take a lot of time and dedication, and you may think this routine will help you get rid of all your excess weight. In the beginning, you may notice that you're shedding pounds and the exercise routine pays off. However, after a few months, you may start to stagnate at the same weight, even if you do the same amount of exercise and you stick to your dietary restrictions. The reason for this is simple: with the repetition of the same type of workout, your body will get used to the exercise routine and will consume less energy.

If you change up the exercise routine, your body will be continually challenged and it will burn more calories, resulting in a more successful weight loss. In addition, you can avoid repetition and boredom. Many people will quit their workout routine due to boredom or lack of results. The change can be made in the intensity of the workout or in the type of workout. You may also increase the time spent working out.

So reasons

1.       If what you’re doing stops working for an extended period of time.

Someone who does the same activity all the time is likely to plateau much sooner than someone who varies her workouts. Just as you can get bored by always doing the same exercises, can also adapt to these exercises so that they don't offer the same benefits that they once did. A little variety might be just the thing you need to get the scale moving again or bust through that strength plateau. "Variety" means either changing something about your current routine (adding speed, distance, hills, resistance, etc.) or trying a totally different activity. If you like some consistency and don't want to change your workout each time you hit the gym, change your routine at least every 4-8 weeks (this includes incorporating changes to both your cardio and strength training exercises). This will keep your muscles challenged, your body guessing, and the results coming!

2.  If your goals change.

For example, if your primary goal was always strength related, and now your primary goal has switched to building muscle or losing fat or anything else (or vice-versa), changes should be made to your program to reflect the changes in your goals.

3.       If you get really bored.

You used to like walking on the treadmill, so why do you dread your workout each day? It's easy to get bored if you stick with the same routine for too long. Sometimes it helps to add variety to your walks. For example, try taking your workout outside, adding speed intervals, putting new music on your iPod or bringing a friend along. If all of that isn't enough, then maybe it's time to try a new activity. Perhaps you've always wanted to try biking or are interested in a new class at your local gym. Change can help keep your workouts fun and interesting, giving you something to look forward to. And that is exactly what will keep you coming back for more.

4.       If something out of your control requires a change.

Meaning, let’s say some outside reason presents itself and forces you to change something. For example, if a change in your schedule warrants a change in your workout, or if you have some sort of injury that prevents you from doing something you are currently doing. Stuff like that.

Changing your workout routine whenever these signs arise will help keep your motivation high as you work to improve fitness level. The key is to pay close attention to how you're feeling both physically and mentally. Exercise shouldn't be a chore that you dread, but something that makes you feel good about yourself!
