Juicing should be part of our everyday diet

Juicing should be part of our everyday diet

Juice cleanses and detoxes have become a must-try thing, but Madeleine wants to encourage people to use them as a healthy part of your daily diet.

We caught up with her for a quick chat about juicing and why you should be doing it.

Madeleine Shaw is supporting Philips' Campaign for Real Juice, encouraging people to enjoy one freshly made fruit and vegetable juice a day as part of a healthy balanced diet.

Why should people drink more fresh juices?

On the whole most of us don't get enough vegetables. Even if you go out to dinner, the serving of vegetables is usually small. Juicing is a quick and easy way of injecting a lot of goodness into the body in one glass.

Do you think a juice diet for a short period is sustainable and healthy?

I think you're better off to have one-a-day for a longer period of time, our campaign for real juice with Philips is all about including a juice a day so you get the benefits throughout the week. Healthy living is all about habits; if you get into a good routine and stick to it and it's achievable, that's the best long-term goal for health and wellness.

Why should people do it/not do it?

Do it - because it's very easy, tasty and quick! Not do it - if you live out of a suitcase and you're travelling around, you do need to be at home with the juicer. So get juicing!

Tell us a little about your one-a-day juicing plan?

My one-a-day juicing plan for Philip's campaign for real juice is about trying to get one juice in a day. This is very achievable for people and it is better to spread it out on a day-to-day basis so you can easily stick to it. My recipes include different juices for different needs - so there are two around exercise; The 'Pre-Workout Juice' has beetroot and ginger to boost energy and the 'Post-Workout Juice' has cucumber, watercress and coconut water to aid muscle recovery. We have also developed the 'Super Skin' for days when you're breaking out and the 'Stir and Purr' with cherries and strawberries for when you can't sleep at night. We have a juice for every time of day and based on ingredients you're putting in, you can choose a juice to fulfil that need!

What are your favourite juice recipes?

My favourite is anything with beetroot in as it is so nutritious - the 'Post- Workout Juice' with coconut and beetroot is just delicious. The 'Stir and Purr' which helps you sleep is also great as I love cherries and strawberries which really help you to sleep at night.

Which ingredients should people include more of in their juices?

Green leafy vegetables are great - they are the golden child; low in sugar, reduce inflammation in the body and pack the most punch in terms of vitamins. So add rocket, watercress, kale and spinach to your juices to get the nutrients and vitamins in.

People are often put off by the colour/taste - so which one juice would you suggest they try for the first time to get their juicing taste buds tickled?

My 'Good and Green Juice' is a good introduction. It contains pear and apple for sweetness so is a nice starter if you're new to juicing. You feel good because it's green but it has more fruit so is not as full on and the sweetness really comes through!
