Whilst it is typically women who embark on weight loss diets for their big day, new research has indicated that men are feeling the pressure to.

New research has found that the majority of men are pressured into losing weight for their wedding by their bride-to-be.

The survey from HYPOXI-Method, a targeted method of body shaping favoured by celebrities including Cheryl Cole, Robbie Williams and Simon Cowell, has found that the average wedding weight loss per person is 10 lbs, whilst the weight lost by couples in preparation for weddings in the UK is the equivalent of 350 blue whales.

The survey of 1,762 people married within the last five years found that two thirds of men adopted a healthier lifestyle of diet and exercise to look their best for the big day, with men losing 9lbs on average. Three quarters of men said their fiancées had tried to ‘pressure’ them into losing weight.

According to the results, 96% of women resolve to get in better shape for their wedding. More than half of brides-to-be began to lose weight six months before their wedding day, with a fifth admitting they started just one month out. The study found that more than two thirds of women do not reach their target weight in time for the big day. The average weight loss for women is 11lbs.

Each year more than 400,000 weddings take place across the UK with the average couple losing 20lbs between them. Weight lost in the UK in preparation for weddings equates to approximately 350 blue whales, or 240 double decker buses. Southerners tend to lose the most weight for their weddings and Swindon has the highest average wedding weight loss at 27lbs per couple.

Speaking about the results of the study Sylwia Pajor, Managing Director at HYPOXI-Method said:

“From the results of our study it is clear that men and women are feeling more pressure than ever to look their absolute best on their wedding day – and the pressure for men often comes from their brides-to-be!
