We won't let a cold or the flu take us down in winter

Regardless of the dark nights, gloomy weather and frosty mornings, it seems that we’re a nation that won’t let winter get in the way. A new survey released today revealed that far from sitting at home and wallowing when the temperature drops and the colds and flu set in, Brits carry on living life to the full throughout winter.

The survey of 2,000 found that while half of people say that the worst thing about winter is catching a cold, a massive 73% of Brits battle on through and go to work with cold and flu symptoms. Further still, 80% of those surveyed have taken less than two days off work due to illness in the past year, choosing to carry on rather than remain at home.

The survey also showed that men and women deal with their illness differently, at the first signs of cold or flu, half of women take a cold and flu remedy to help fight the symptoms, whilst one in ten men would ideally climb straight back into bed. Tellingly, over a third of men surveyed admit they moan about cold and flu more than women.

Despite almost a third of those surveyed commenting that they dislike snow and it’s knock on effects such as blocked roads, delayed trains and icy footpaths, it appears that even the bad weather can’t stop resilient Brits. 83% of those surveyed note that they always make an effort to get into work, even when the snow starts falling and the transport systems start to fail.

The survey discovered that we'll make a conscious effort to go outside in the winter too. Of those surveyed 44% of people love going for winter walks, particularly if it has been snowing, while 37% like visiting winter and Christmas markets. Further still, the results revealed that on average Brits only stay in one night a week extra in winter, remaining defiant and venturing outside for meals with friends, Christmas shopping and festive parties.

A representative from Nurofen Cold and Flu who commissioned the survey comments: “This survey demonstrates that we really are a hardy nation who won’t let winter, or cold and flu, get in the way of us living our lives to the full. From carrying on to work and really embracing winter activities, it is clear that we want to make the most of winter.”

To help maximise the winter months, the survey also revealed a key kit which allowed people to continue making the most of winter, including; waterproof jacket, cold and flu relief and furry boots. Essential items when 66% of those surveyed face a commute to work: half of who are embarking on a journey which takes 20 minutes or more.
