It may be the smallest room in the house, but that doesn't mean that there's no room for style. There are hundreds of different styles you can bring to your bathroom - they may just need a little adaptation.

Here's how we would do just a few styles;

Mediterranean
Characteristic to this style is vivid colours, sharp contrasts and colours of the nature around it. It's a reflection of the beautiful climate and surroundings you'll fing on the Med. Lots of sunshine, warm days, shimering blue seas and a casual, and simple lifestyle all make Mediterranean style what it is.

  • Simplicity is key to meditteranean decor. One or two high impact accessories, which, preferably come from outdoors. Small flowering plants on the windowsill, a basket of shells or interesting stones, driftwood on the wall, or sculptural branches in a vase by the bathtub.
  • Cool floors are popular in mediterranean homes, and waterproof is essential in the bathroom, so choose natural tiles, such as granite, or limestone, or even brick, or concrete, inset with stones, or shells. The other advantage of these floors is that they are extremelt hardwearing, meaning that they will last a lifetime.
  • Greece is reknowned for the bright azure blue and dazling white of it's decor, reflecting the white, sandy beaches and shimmering blue sea. Be careful with this on, though, as the light over here, in the UK just isn't the same as it is in the Greek Islands.
  • Africa has more rocky and arrid landscapes, though none the less beautiful. This means their pallate is orientated more towards earthy tones. Sienna, Ocher, Teracotta. Reds, yellows and varied shades of brown all combine to make a beautiful room. Again, natural tiles on the floor, granite and limestone, bringing some mich needed cool into a hot room.
  • Tiles are readily available in meditteranean, as it's one of the largest industries, especially in Italy. Use Vibrant, colourful tiles to accent the room for an old Italian feel to the room.
  • France is noted for it's intense colours and hues. These reflect the sun and sky, as well as the vibrant flowers and berries, olive trees and Cypress trees. Use Red, Green, Blue, and yellow in decorating your french style bathroom

Formal
If you love the look of hotel bathrooms, then you're probably hankering after a traditional and formal style at home. Symmetry and order appeal to you, and you're looking for a rich, graceful and welcoming throne room

  • Cabinets are clean, and simple, with curving lines and flowing shapes, but in this room, every surface calls out for displays of treasures.
  • Wood is the matterial of choice in this room. Painted or burnished, it's a hallmark or formal style. Use Mahogany, Maple or Brich woods for the cabinets, bath panel, and even panel the lower halves of the walls with it.
  • Age is beauty in a room like this. Freestanding bathtubs on claw feet give an antique and elegant feel to the room. Pedestal sinks with elaborate taps add instant age.
If the supplies available in the local hardware store just don't cut it, head for salvage shops and specialty catalogs.
  • Luxurious flooring is essential in the traditional bathroom. Tile, Marble or pilished granite bring an elegant feel to the room.

Japanese
The object of decor in the traditional Japanese home is to create a serene and enlightening atmosphere. Simplicity, order, harmony, and practicality are the important aspects of the Japanese room.

  • Geometric forms are important, especially squares, rectangles and grids. Emphasis within these forms is on the vertical. Stepped motifs and geometric patterns should be used for embelishment.
  • Details are important in this room, so there should be nothing overlooked. Even the smallest thing should be beautiful and tie in with the room. Taps, doorhandles, light switches, towel hooks - they should all convey grace and have almost sculptural qualities.
  • Natural is best in Japanese style - Wood should be left as unadorned as possible, Slate or granite floors should convey their natural beauty.
  • Meditation should be embraced. A space, such as an alcove is the perfect place for quiet reflection, and should be equipped for it. A comfortable seat, and something to reflect on - such as a flower would make the space complete.

Country Country stlye reflects informality. It has sturdy and straighforward furnishings and fittings. Handcrafted from beautiful, traditional matterials.

  • Colours Should be taken from nature. White, blue and cream give an old country look, with room that feels fresh and clean. If thise seems boring, enhance it with red, burgundy or plum.
  • Natural matterials are again key in this room. Wood, Quarry tiles, brick and metal all ooze country carisma and olde worlde charm. Where possible, allow the natural beauty of the matterial show through.
  • Ornaments in this bathroom should be a little bit whimsical. Antiques or handcrafted items, all should be interesting and practical. A basket filled with towels, or a rag rug, a shelf full of interesting bottles, or an antique clock all serve to add antique charm to the room.
