Choosing a pet - Cats

Cats have always been a popular family pet. And no wonder because their independance makes them easy to care for, but they can still be loving and pleasant creatures.

People most often think cats are aloof and independant, but infact, they do like human company and can get lonely on their own. Though they'll always do exactly what they want, when they want, which is usually the opposite of what you want to do, they can be adorable - again, when they want.

the rule about cats having nine lives may not be true, but they do live a while. Up to 15 years is not a perfectly reasonable lifespan - The cat will be at home long after those pesky kids have left!

Cats like to lead their own lives. Their independance can sometimes be a curse for the both of you as cats tend to get themselves into trouble alot, so consider pet insurance if you do get a cat.

The most common cat you'll come across in the UK is the British shorthair. They're fairly independant and best for small families, where most everyone is out most of the day. They're very Chatty and energetic and need someone to play with occasionally.

If you're after a more energetic and cuddly feline, Go for an exotic shorthair. A little chubbier looking than the British shorthair, they're real softies and will sit on your lap and purr for hours.

If you don't want to becomt the automatic door opener for your car, an inteligent Tiffanie will suit you fine. These can learn things like opening doors by themselves, but they're still affectionate. They'll follow you around and try to wrap themselves round your legs and trip you up as often as possible.

Most animal sanctuaries have cats to be rehomed. Not only will this be cheaper than buying a pedigree if you're only after a companion, but you'll be saving a life in the process
