With Kensington Palace welcoming its new prince, the smell of fresh paint won’t be too far away as Britain’s favourite royal couple will have been busy getting ready for their new bundle of joy. With the excitement of welcoming a newborn comes preparing the perfect nursery, and like every other couple, Kate and William would have undoubtedly deliberated over just the right shade.

So to celebrate the new arrival and to help expectant parents to create the perfect scheme for their own newborns, Dulux has put together a selection of colour suggestions and design hints that can help create the ideal nursery for your new arrival.

With decorating having the potential to not only enhance a space but create a lasting emotional impact, the process of decorating a nursery is one of the most pivotal events in preparing for a baby and making a space a family can enjoy together.

Speaking of the importance of getting the scheme just right, Marianne Shillingford, Dulux Creative Director, says:  “Everyone knows the rousing effects of bright and bold reds as opposed the calming feeling when you walk into a room of neutrals, so it’s crucial to get the colour and design spot on in order to create an idyllic place to spend time with babies during their early days.”

However with some experts claiming colour choice could also have the ability to affect mood and behaviour, getting the choice right could also potentially be the difference between restless nights and calming sleep. Try these hints from Marianne on how you can be clever with colour and create the right space for your baby:

“Pink is the happiest colour.  It’s hard to even say the word without smiling and adds fun to small people’s spaces. You can combine it with blue to balance the sweetness without diluting an ounce of joy.

Yellow bursts with life, and we associate it with youthfulness and creativity. Opt for softer delicate yellows rather than strong ones to avoid over stimulating or you may end up with an 'enfant terrible' rather than a child genius.

Although there is no evidence to suggest that one particular colour will make a baby more intelligent, an energising decorating scheme using lots of colours will help to stimulate and engage a developing young mind.  Add interesting painted features to look at like colourful chairs and simple wall murals but don't overload the space or you risk sleepless nights and noisy days.

Combine pastel shades of aqua and mint to help your baby be more alert, with white on the nursery furniture and furnishings, then add pops of clean crisp colour in mobiles and lampshades to perk up the sleepiest of sleepy heads.”

Marianne continues: “Putting together a decorating scheme for your nursery can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the preparation for your new baby. To create the best space possible, it’s important to look at the effects of certain colour and room designs before grabbing your brush and getting started.”
