Too much storage could equal too much clutter. While storage is important and crucial when you live in a small space, it’s important to think about what you’re hiding away. Celebrate the things you love by putting them on display, but don’t be afraid to have a clear out. As well creating more space, clearing out your clutter and cutting back on unnecessary storage can be incredibly therapeutic.

It’s a common belief that painting everything white will make a space feel bigger. While this might be the case you are at risk of making a room feel cold and unfriendly if you go for all white. Opt for light greys, blues or greens to make your rooms feel bigger, while keeping that cosy intimate feeling. If you’re really looking to create a feeling of space try paining everything including the woodwork and ceilings in similar tones, by doing this you are effectively blurring the boundaries of the room and tricking the eye into overlooking the defining edges of the space.

Make your furniture work harder. Your bed is probably the biggest piece of furniture you own so it makes sense to make the most of it and opt for drawer or ottoman storage in the base. Think about how other furniture can also double up, for example pick stools that also work as side tables or a table on wheels to allow for easy space changes; these little adaptations will help you to really make the most of your small space.

Don’t be afraid to make a statement. By introducing one large piece of art or making one wall a feature you create a main focal point that will draw in the eye. This will work better than smaller pictures and ornaments that can feel busy and cluttered in a small space.

Mirrors are the easiest way to give the illusion of a larger space. By using the biggest mirror you can, opposite a window or other main light source, you are not only extending the look of the room spatially but enhancing the natural light within it, giving you a light, airy and spacious feel.
