The ever-luxurious Beckham family announced their plans to build baby Harper a £100,000 playhouse this week. The Wendy house is so large it requires a planning application for the garden. Home enhancement retailer Homebase has revealed that playhouses are booming, with approximately 13% of all homes with children owning one. But what to do if you don't have the pennies to splash out on a ready-made playhouse?

As the summer months are fast approaching and children look to play outside, Homebase's Design and Decorating Academy student Anna Casson shares her top tips on creating a bijou Beckham playhouse at a fraction of the cost.

1) Paint your shed- brighten up your garden shed with a lick of paint in your child's favourite colours. Cuprinol specialise in vibrant hues with child-friendly resistance. Remember that the inside of the shed can be painted too. I love the pastel pinks from VB's SS 2015 catwalk, perfect for a pretty playhouse

2) Decorate the floor- Giving the floor a lick of paint will complete the look. Before you start painting, sand trouble spots to ensure there are no splinters. Brightly coloured carpet floor tiles are inexpensive and can make the room even cosier

3) Dress windows and doors- Adding a small window will create that playhouse look and provide instant light and warmth in the summer months. Customise it further by adding colourful curtains and window boxes for plants. Decorative door handles can be fixed at a child's height to add to the feeling that it is their own special house

4) Get customising- Bring special touches to the room with small pops of colour and accessories. Throws, blankets, beanbags and cushions are a great, inexpensive way of doing this.

5) Let there be light- fairy lights can help make the playhouse seem even more magical for your child.
