Karl Lagerfeld thinks Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton is a "genius".

The Chanel designer is a huge fan of Sarah - who took over at the label when Alexander McQueen committed suicide in 2010 - and believes she has done a great job since taking the reins.

He told The Times magazine: "I must say the girl who took over McQueen is kind of a genius. I like what she does."

Alexander was suffering with depression following the death of his mother before he died and Karl admitted the fashion industry is tough but says people need to know this before they decide to make a career out of it.

When asked if his privileged upbringing made it easier to cope with the pressures of the industry than working class people like Alexander and former Dior designer John Galliano, who was found guilty of anti-Semitic abuse against a couple in Paris, Karl didn't agree.

He said: "Don't accept the job. Nobody forces you to do that. They want the money and the pleasant life it can bring out and they are exhausted and burnt out. Then they should keep their business personal, small. They should not be in a company where so many people depend on them."
