The Huishan Zhang Spring Summer 13 girl is graceful, elegant, expensive and exclusive. And this is completely reflected in the make-up.

UK Max Factor make-up artist Mel Arter created the look backstage.

She says: "They are traditional but seek to push boundaries. On one hand they are conventional but on the other they are unpredictable. They are debutant rebels. So expect to see the unexpected."

Backstage Mel explained that she decided to use the cheek as a strong statement as people have become afraid to use colour on the cheeks. But, by keeping everything else pared down it doesn't look too out of place.

When applying the make-up, Mel explained:

"Applying make-up is like war paint because you are applying attitude and a mindset."

Here's how you can create the look:

SKIN - is super flawless. We are preparing the perfect canvas. Skin is matt. We’re applying Max Factor’s All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Foundation all over the skin’s surface using a foundation brush. This will get the smoothest result. We want skin to look flawless.

Mel said: "I really wanted to push on the matte skin. We weren’t really guided by the seasons with this look."

EYEBROWS -are left organic and in a natural state.

EYES – there’s a slight glossy lid up to the brow using petroleum jelly. This will be the only area on the canvas that there will be shine. Lashes are curled first, then coated with False Lash Effect mascara (only one coat).

CHEEKS – each girl's identity will be defined by her cheek colour. We’re using colours that we wouldn’t traditionally use; hues of lime, turquoise and tangerine applied in a painterly way to achieve a beautifully subtle result. We’re using Smoky Eye Effect Eyeshadow in Blue Tempest and Citrus Thunder.

Mel said: "Tap the colour onto the cheeks; it’s much easier to build up the colour rather than rubbing it in."

LIPS - remain true to their natural colour. They are bought to life if needed by Colour Elixir Lipstick in Rosewood 833, used sparingly and applied with fingertip.
