Jessica Alba wearing Gucci

Award-winning celebrity hair hairdresser Richard Ward tells you how to re-create Jessica Alba's look from the Golden Globes.

“This style works best on day old hair, in fact, a bit of city grime is actually ideal for keeping this style in place as it grips the hair.

Start by applying my Couture Hair Memoriser Holding Serum (£17) through the mid lengths and ends of your hair. As well as smoothing and de-frizzing the hair, it contains a heat protector which is vital for the next step.

Create a side parting, and apply small heated rollers over your head. Work down from the parting, and remember to keep the rollers parallel with each other. Before fixing each roller in place, apply a little hairspray to each section of hair to tame any flyaway hairs. Leave the rollers in for 15 minutes, or until they’ve completely cooled down.

Next, using a wide tooth comb, gently brush out the curl so they form gentle waves. Use large clips to fix and position the waves along both sides of your face. Secure in place using a fine hold hairspray. These clips will be removed further down the line.

Create a small pony tail at the nape of your neck using a small section of hair and secure in place using a small hair band. Wrap a small section of hair around the hair band to disguise it, and secure in place using a grip. This will eventually form the bun.

Now alternating hair from the left and right sides, wrap and twist small sections of hair over and around the hair band. Use the natural form of the hair waves to help bend the hair into place.

As the bun begins to build, you can gently backcomb small sections of hair as you go, to increase the hairs substance. To do this, gather a small section of hair, backcomb the section from the root, spritz with hairspray and then smooth over using a bristle brush before twisting and securing into place with a grip. It’s important to use a bristle brush after backcombing the hair so it looks smooth and glossy rather than rough and matted. At this stage, you can start to incorporate the excess hair from the pony tail into the style using the same technique.

Once you’ve used up all sections of hair, make sure that the style is secured firmly into place and secure with plenty of hairspray. Remove the clips that were originally placed at the front of the head, and you’re ready to fit the dance floor.”
